No.80 – Celebration
of ‘otherness’

Workshops/Talks /Performances

Artwork by Iman Mahdy

On 25 May, YWMP will present No. 80, a one-day festival to celebrate ‘otherness’ with local partners Cowley Climate Collective, Divine Schism, Hyperstition, Mom Was Right, OCM and QBear.

At Modern Art Oxford, from 3pm until late, YWMP will bring the community together with performances, talks and workshops to encourage conversations around being othered. It is significant that YWMP have chosen to host this festival in their hometown, a colonially-led city, to make a stand against the stigmatisation of those who have felt powerless in society.

The name No. 80 comes from a previous tick box in the UK population census. It designated other races/ethnicities that did not make the main list.

Headlining the festival is Wild Mix, a new project from Jenny Moore. Commissioned by OCM, it features a queer ensemble of five singers, drummers, and a kickboxer. Through a soaring six-part song-cycle, multi-layered vocals, intense beats, and poignant storytelling, Wild Mix asks: what does healing feel like?

The festival will feature performances from ãssia ghendir with Leo Hermitt, Casual Wednesday, Elouiza, Maria Uzor, Mom Was Right X Hyperstition, Nailbreaker, Street Soundsystem, and YAY💕MARIA.

Workshops will include Deep Listening for Difficult Times (led by Najia Bagi), F*Choir - Collective Singing (led by Bianca Stephens), Internationalist Ecology and Sustainable Communities: What does environmentalism look like to you? (led by Cowley Climate Collective), participatory process-led sculpture 'Red Sap Rising' (led by Rosie McLean), Hysterical Scream (led by Kate Mahony), and Slime Trail Music Box Composition (led by Hannah Fredsgaard Jones).

Frieda Toranzo Jaeger: A future in the light of darkness exhibition will be open until 7pm.
